In a quest to address the adverse effects of climate change, Samfya Town Council has been implementing a Transforming Landscapes for Resilience and Development (TRALARD) project funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Green Economy. The project is dabbed Promoting Diversified, Resilient and Sustainable Livelihoods.
To confront this climate predicament stressed by the undisputable and ever-increasing impact on the economy and physical health compelling evidence demonstrating a distinguished ruin, K32,673,393.94 worth of Sixty-five (65) livelihood sub-projects are so far been implemented in nine (09) out of ten (10) wards of Samfya district directly benefiting approximately fourteen thousand eight hundred and seventy five (14,875) households of which seven thousand three hundred and one (7,304) are male headed while seven thousand five hundred and seventy one (7,571) are female headed.
The project in collaboration with the department of Community Development is undertaking the savings group concept of which we currently stand at forty (40) groups which have saved and managed over four hundred thousand kwacha (K400, 000) as of May 2023.
The performance of the project elated the Council Chairperson James Kapilila as he met one of the beneficiary group Kasoma Mandyata located in Chimana Ward of Samfya district, in a quest to appreciate the impact of the project. The civic leader was pleased to learn that the group managed to multiply the number of livestock and have so far made substantial sales while maintaining good number for continuous production.
He encouraged the members to expand the investment further and establish new ventures from the earnings. “My advise to you is that through this major investment that the government has given to this group, new ventures can be born.” He said.
The council chairperson stressed that the major purpose of the project is to address poverty levels in the district at household level and discouraged the group from indulging in activities that have a negative effect on the environment considering the effects of climate change.
Of the sixty-five sub projects Isamba ward is dominating with fifteen, Musaba and Lupili wards have eight,
Mano, Katanshya and Kapilibilla wards have seven while kapata ward is sitting with six projects,
Chimana is at five, Lumamya is trailing with 1 sub project.
The groups have majorly been funded in Livestock production and have been encouraged to integrate with vegetable production considering the fact that each project was supplemented with Solar Powered water schemes.
Meanwhile, Tralard Subproject A has come to a close after five years of its existence in Samfya District.
