Samfya is a resort district located in luapula province sharing boarders with Chitambo, Lunga, Chifunabuli, Milenge, Mansa and Chilubi district with an international boundary along the shores of Lupula River
The district has one (1) Constituency namely Bangweulu represented by an elected member of parliament and ten (10) wards represented by elected councilors as well as one (1) elected Council Chairperson responsible for civic duties.
Traditionally, Samfya has one major ethnic groups of people namely the Kabende headed by Senior Chief Kalasamukoso and two other chiefs namely; Kasoma Bangweulu and Mulakwa. Samfya is also famous for the traditional and cultural music popularly known as Kalindula and Kalela.
Samfya population has been steadily growing from 91,569 in 2010 to 147,189 according to the 2022 population census with an estimated annual growth rate of 4.0%.
The district has been predominantly depending on fishing as a major economic activity due to the availability of water bodies and fish stocks until 2016 when the Local Authority embarked on an ambitious quest to develop the tourism sector owing to the natural resources such as a white sandy beach located along the shores of lake Bangweulu as well as animal species in the Kalasa Mukoso Game Management Area
